| Google+ vs. deviantART |
[Aug. 7th, 2011|01:16 pm] |

I've been pondering this concept for a few days now, wondering if G+ in it's current or potential form could replace my uses for dA? +Trey Ratcliff has definitely shown that you can gain an audience very quickly in G+ and get quite alot of quality feedback. Here's some of the things I've noticed so far.
1) The G+ lightbox for photos is awesome, I love the layout and the sidebar stream for comments. The things I loose currently from dA are the ability to +fav a pic and add a picture title in addition to a description. Could +1 be adapted to become a G+ image "favoriting" system?
2) Audience currently in G+ is still invite only, but can I say dA has 25 million users (or more now)? No, but not everyone on G+ is an artist either. So it's a give and take situation on what kind of feedback we're talking about.
3) G+ hands down destroys dA on managing people you watch. The groups functionality of dA has served ZERO purpose for the 8 years I've been on dA. Grouping people together and creating lists doesn't even give you any additional options to managing your +deviantWATCH. Circles wins by default.
4) Funny enough...dA has Search. This is temporary, but it's worth noting.
5) One of the things dA has really set me off with is the lack of the ability to do a name change. If you have an old AOL style screenname (Justin316a) and you want to change that to something more modern, you have to start from scratch. Not even a new issue, this is something dA has sat on for years. Even a paid option is better than cluttering up the system with people who've had to make multiple accounts 3 or 4 times over. My G+ account is attached to me, so I can control the name associated with the account. Now the current "real names" debate going on right now is something of another issue in my mind. That's something I feel is still evolving in what Google wants this site to be. In the end I think Google will have a option to service those who prefer a screen name and those using their real name.
What do you guys think? |

| | Google Music Beta | ] | Still messing about in Google+ and experimenting with its features. Functionality-wise it's got alot to give Facebook a run for its money. How well its adoption goes with the general public is up in the air and could go either way. Here's my quick rundown of the features and a link to the demo.
http://plus.google.com
Google Circles: Google's answer to friend list creation. This interface is so nice it actually makes making these list alittle fun. The demo above demonstrates this far better than I can explain here, but basically allows you to individualize how you want your posts shared. Things you might not want shared with your family you can separate from your core group of friends, and vice-versa. You could do some of these things in Facebook, but as anyone whose tried will attest, it's a pain in the ass. Whenever you make a post, G+ asks you if want it shared with the Public or select Circles.
Google Hangouts: This is the draw that seems to catch most people attention. Hangout are a spin-off of Google Talk that allows Users to create 10-User video chatrooms, which are exceptionally smooth. You have a line of all the Users webcams in a room, and in the main window is always the loudest person talking in chat. Text and YouTube sharing are also enabled so the group can easily share vids and media. Additionally, if the original host leaves, the chat keeps going. Hangouts can be shared with the public or set to individual private Circles the User sets. I'm hoping to use this with a Ustream or Livestream broadcast soon so stay tuned.
Google Sparks: Sparks is a list of the things you find interesting, also like Facebook. The difference is where Facebook uses these interests to mostly just to show you ads based on those interests, Sparks attempts to show you stories from Google News relevant to those interests. I say "attempts" because it's pretty obvious this feature is not fully complete yet. The absence of any Google Reader implementation is really noticeable, which Google says is coming soon. Ideally, I think this will be an awesome feature if I'm able to guide Sparks with my tastes by importing feeds from sites I frequently visit and Thumbs Up/Down Spark's suggested stories (i.e. Pandora's recommendations engine for music).
Browser Extensions: This is something I really didn't think about until I actually got on G+. Because the system uses open standards, HTML5 and CSS, Users can add all kinds of features to their own user interface. Just browsing my stream and the Chrome Web Store, I've found a bunch of tips and tricks to individualize my personal experience with the site. Think of it like the way User's made all those crazy and radically different layouts on MySpace, but only you see those changes that you choose to add. A simple Java applet let me add a radio stream from AmazingRadio and video streams from NASA, BBC and TWiT (Google Pushbar). A simple browser extension for Firefox and Chrome let me make slight changes to the pages CSS template to make the flow of my stream more readable (Usability Boost for Google Plus). All this allows me to make little or big changes to the look of G+ without subjugating my visitors to my preference of layout.
Mobile App Instant Upload: Simple, yet efficient photo uploading system. Take a picture with your phone and it can be set to automatically upload to a waiting list where you can approve them to share, archive, or delete. No wires, drives, or space restrictions. And because it's in a holding locker waiting for approval, you don't have to worry about what you did at that crazy party last night getting blasted out to the masses.
Huddle: A group SMS client for Circles. This is something I'll definitely use at a Con. It's like a mobile chatroom using TXT messaging, allowing the group in the Circle to communicate with everyone else, so no multiple TXTs to keep everyone on the same page in an outing. Again check out the link above to see a better demonstration.
Interestingly enough, the devs have been extremely open to user requests and suggestions for features. Some of the most intriguing I've hear are things like adding Google Translate to your Stream, allowing Users to follow and communicate directly with other Users in different languages. So what do you guys think, I'm indulging my nerd-side here but this is the stuff I live for. =P |

I'm happy to see that we finally have some real options for legal digital copies for the books coming out now, but I was wondering from the community what they've seen and how they feel about how they're shaping out. Personally, I do like the options we have now, but I'm not completely satisfied with the shape they're taking....yet. There's some things I believe could be presented better, there's some opportunities I think that are being missed, but we're REALLY early in this distribution model and just as we can see with the newspapers, things are still taking shape. I think it's really important however that readers understand these changes as they're happening, because the publishers are learning too at the same time.

TechCrunch's side-by-side review iPhone vs Droid http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/10/30/smartphone-showdown-iphone-3gs-vs-motorola-droid/
This is what I've been waiting to seal the deal on a smartphone for me. I really love messing around on an iPhone but hate ATT and I don't want to encourage Apple's totalitarian BS on their development side with the App Store and jailbreaking to make the damn thing do what I want. I loved the concept of the G1 on T-mobile, but it seemed clunky and early (like every time you buy the first iteration of a Nintendo Portable). There's also the problem of getting locked into a 2-year contract with the possibility of the iPhone dropping ATT in June.
This thing however takes care of all my concerns, It runs Pandora, its got a keyboard, its tight and functional, inter-changeable memory sticks starting with 16GBs,it's a GPS with voice turn-by-turn free out of the box, it's got an inter-changable battery if power becomes an issue, it runs multi-apps at once, and if I choose it's my damn alarm clock and digital picture frame. Highly recommend the iPhone vs Droid article, they do a really good job of explaining both phones strengths and weaknesses.

James Moore "And a Comic Shall Lead Them"
"It is a curious fact that people are never so trivial as when they take themselves seriously." - Oscar Wilde
I am inclined to wonder if there is a line somewhere in the Book of Revelation that proclaims "and a comic shall lead them." Jon Stewart has set new standards for both comedy and journalism on television. Oddly, he was originally supposed to just make us laugh on Comedy Central. He's done that, quite proficiently, but Stewart has also figured out that some jokes are sad as well as too important not to tell.
But he's not supposed to be doing the job of reporters.
TV journalists used to almost guarantee successful careers if they could go into a tape file and find a public figure on camera with a quote that contradicted something they had just said into another camera. Tape archives had made it possible for hypocrisy to succeed irony as the fuel of insightful journalism. The most famous of these was probably George H. W. B**h's (not writing that name anymore, ever) order to "Read my lips, no new taxes." And then he raised them because he had no choice and his promise was held up in his face for trying to do what was right for the country while bad for him politically.
The practice of juxtaposing sound bites or quotes all but disappeared in journalism because few reporters had the time or inclination to search for context. They just wanted the here and the now and one side shouting at the other as if life were a cable program. (Yeah, I know, it almost is.) Reporters used to brag when they accomplished such coups as finding the historic contradictory quote, and their colleagues were justifiably jealous.
Jon Stewart has brought back context to journalism by making people in our drive-by culture responsible for their words and even actions. Stewart has helped Jim Cramer of CNBC make that awkward transition from silly and self-involved to just pathetic. Cramer, who famously recommended purchasing Bear-Stearns stock prior to the firm's total collapse, is reading Mein Karl and using the strategy of attacking the messenger when the message is so devastating. On the Today Show, he tried to dismiss Stewart as an "entertainer" who runs a "variety show."
Jon Stewart, of course, is both of those things but he is also a cultural icon. His program is free to deploy approaches that mainstream journalists cannot because he labors in the vineyards of comedy. If a writer for the Wall Street Journal or even the Boston Globe had put together a piece deconstructing the fallibilities of Jim Cramer's advice they would have had great problems with publication. Lawyers would have been engaged and editors would have furrowed their brows and worried about being counter-attacked or whether CNBC's advertisers would have stayed away from the paper. Sadly, no editor or reporter would have even thought up the idea of doing an analysis of Cramer's nonsensical babblings. Stewart has no such constraints. Everything must serve the laugh. Stewart has become a kind of Murrow for the new millennium.
Nonetheless, reporters at the big TV networks and the major publications have no excuse. Minute by minute people like Jim Cramer are feeding crap into our culture and public perceptions and it has nothing to do with reality and everything to do with their egos. How is it that a comedian is the first person to hold accountable these cheerleaders who are promoting a team that has no chance to win and, in some cases, isn't even in the damned game?
Analysts doing the autopsy on newspaper reporting and the corpse of mainstream journalism are constantly lamenting the fact that so many young people and an increasing number of others are getting their news from Jon Stewart and Comedy Central. Where else is there left to look for thoughtful, analytical, and insightful analysis of the issues of our day? The yuks are just a bonus. Cable news shows can proclaim "no bias, no bull" all they want but every story is framed for a purpose, which is drama and conflict. The viewers and the readers aren't there without the dramatic tension. You might as well be watching Law and Order: Special News Unit.
Unfortunately for traditional journalism, the audience increasingly realizes that much of the material presented is manufactured controversy that requires no resolution. Stewart, though, gives us the laconic and wiseass view of the day's news and nothing he says seems contrived. Strangely, his entire broadcast is a contrivance and yet it remains the most enlightening in the spectrum of TV "news." The only thing worrisome about Stewart's ascension in American culture is that his schtick and acerbic wit might be a canary in our red, white, and blue coal mine. We've got a funny guy in charge of how we think.
Can that be good? |

| | Pandora | ] | After about 2 month on Vista I finally have my hangup that I'm going to have to add XP back on a dual-boot. Epson in their profiteering wisdom have decided it's in my best interests NOT to release 64-bit drivers for my scanner....32-bit Vista drivers, but not 64-bit. I loved how their tech support directed me to their online store when I asked if they had any plans on releasing a driver in the future.
This wouldn't be such a problem if I had installed XP first, but already set up a partition table inside Vista for it, Windows XP and Linux (FYI - generallly if you install multiple OSs on one PC the last OS takes over the master boot record, so going newest to oldest is that much more of a pain.) So basically I have to wipe Vista again and delete the partitions, then start over beginning with XP then splitting it off to Vista, and save Linux for a rainy drunken whim.
....Damn it this stuff's getting old.... |
